Kitchen Design/Remodeling - BACKSPLASH

Question 6
Hi Kitchen backsplash ideas !!
QUESTION: Hi, we are having our kitchen remodeded and I want a backsplash on the wall behind the cooktop. The area is about 84x18 in. Our contractor insists that if I want the wall tiles there, I must have them on all the other wall spaces in the kitchen where there is no cabintery. That will not only be too expensive, but also I dont want that much color in the kitchen(I ve chosen a bright wall tile). Please tell me if I am doing something totally wrong by getting the wall tiles only behind the cooktop

Thanks,
Farha

ANSWER: Hi Farha,

It seems that your contractor does not understand your request. You only need tiles exactly where you want them and no where else. Contractors invent ways to take advantage of customers by telling them exactly what your contractor told you figuring that you would agree with him and go along with what ever he wanted instead of what you want your kitchen to look like. I know because until I retired I was a contractor for many years and to this day I only did what my customer wanted and not what I could do to take advantage of them.

It is your home, your kitchen, and your money paying for this remodeling project. Get it thew way you want or else.

Good luck,

  1. QUESTION: Thanks for your reply Van, you are absolutely right on that. The problem is, Although I want it the way I want, I also do not want to do something terribly wrong with my kitchen which may affect its resale value. So I am requesting your opinion on whether its something of individual prefernce or something very out of norm. Could you please clarify that ? I really appreciate your help,

    Best Thanks

    Hello again Farha,

I really do understand your concern. I personally have installed tile backsplashes in both of the configurations that we have discussed in your previous posts.

To correctly clarify you question from my professional experience, no matter how you prefer the look and feel of your kitchen which will be your preference while you live there a new owner will have their own ideas of how they want their home to look from room to room.

It all boils down to what you feel comfortable with.

I do not feel that a full backsplash verus a partial backsplash will not make or break the sale of a house.

More than likely the new owner will not like your selection and rip it out and replace it with what they do like.

If you decided to do the section behind your stove first and wanted to do the rest later you can do that if you want to.

    I hope this helps you,

    Best of luck,
